Bath
Road Sporting Year

"CYCLING AT IT’S BEST"
The club was
formed in 1886, so there have been quite a few of these. Impressive arrays of
trophies are handed out to the prizewinners at this sit down meal. There are
trophies to be won from Juveniles through to the 12-hour championship. The
dinner is currently held at Brunel University. Dress is smart but the event is
not stuffy, an evening full of laughs which is followed by a disco and bar.
Everyone seems to have a good time and many of our non-cycling guests come year
after year.
A hilly
event for all comers, which does a circuit around the Berkshire Downs. The event
is very well run but takes quite a few marshals who direct the riders around the
route. It is an unwritten rule that everyone helps at this event and does not
race elsewhere. Bath Roaders can ride if there are enough marshals.
A seventy-mile road race for junior riders (16-18 year old) currently held
on the lumpy Hedgerley circuit. This race is part of the prestigious British
Cycle Federation Junior National Series. Another very well run event, which
takes a lot of marshals who direct the riders around the route and warn
approaching traffic. Again it is an unwritten rule that everyone helps out with
running this important event. Those Bath Roaders youthful enough to take part
will be allowed to do so.
Late
September
- Annual
Bath and Back Ride.
About
twenty years ago the club stopped running a race from London to Bath and back
down the Bath Road. This was 214 miles long and was a traditional event from the
earliest days of the club. It was resurrected in the last few years as a group
ride from Hayes to Bath and back with an overnight stop in between. The ride
goes through the lanes and is about 110 miles each way; the pace is moderate
with a following car taking baggage and spare wheels. The ride is a challenge
for the very unfit but well within the ability of a leisure cyclist who
regularly rides about 50 miles or so.
Early
November -
Birthday Tea and AGM.
Annual
General Meeting where reports from officials are heard, propositions voted on
and officials re-elected. All members are encouraged to come along and have
their say in how the club is run. This is followed by the Birthday tea where an
informal (low cost) meal and plenty of liquid refreshment is consumed, usually
followed by a slide show of the years cycling or non cycling snaps.
Early
December - Photo
run.
Traditional
photo shoot preserving for prosperity those silly enough to ride out on a
freezing cold day. The photo is cunningly taken outside a pub, which normally
provides a reasonably priced meal. As the pub is normally no more than twenty
miles for the starting place there is no excuse not to ride this one.
Through
the Year.
Bath Road
Evening Timetrials.
These are
club events, i.e. primarily for club members normally between 10 and 20 riders
take part. They are held every Wednesday from mid April to the end of August on
a circuit of 9.2 miles around Black Park, which is between Slough and Uxbridge,
these are ideal events to have your first dabble at racing. The race is as
serious as you want to make it as you are riding for a time.
After the event we retire to a local pub for a drink and a chat.
Social
Runs
Once in a while the Sunday club run meets at a pre-arranged pub for lunch so that the non-cyclists, family and friends can all meet up. These events will be notified in the magazine, newsletter or website.
The combine
is an association of clubs who pool their resources to run a series of club time
trials over the racing season. All the events start from the Amersham Road just
off the A40 junction; they are run over 10, 25 and 50 miles. The races are an
intermediate step between a club time trial and a proper open time trial. The
dates of these events will appear in your calendar of events, entry details and
more information can be obtained from the time trial secretary.
Hillingdon
Circuit, Hayes.
From
April to September on every Tuesday there are races on the circuit catering for
juveniles to elite category riders. It is a particularly good, safe place to
learn to race in road races as it is off the public roads and relatively flat.
It is all a good place to go and watch and cheer on your tem mates as the riders
lap the circuit in just over 2 minutes.
